Rudolf Vladimirovich Kamelin (1938-2016), Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the “Higher Plants Herbarium” Department, the Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, President of the Russian Botanical Society initiated the production of the multivolume “Flora of Altai”. Rudolf Vladimirovich drafted an introduction for the “Flora of Altai”, a brief overview of the natural conditions and vegetation cover in Altai Mountain Country, keys for identifying groups and classes, as well as the families of flowering plants and gymnosperms of the “Flora”.
Kamelin, together with Alexander Ivanovich Shmakov, Professor, Biology PhD, Director of the South-Siberian Botanical Garden, Altai State University, developed the concept of the “Flora of Altai” and laid the foundation of the full-scale expeditionary research in Altai within the borders of four countries – Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China.
