The project thoroughly describes the flora of Altai, the place located on the territory of four states in the center of Asia - Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China.

The botanical garden team has been studying the flora and vegetation of Altai Mountain Country since 1993.

27 volumes will be published within the project. The first volume of the "Flora of Altai" came out in 2005.

"There is one noteworthy peculiarity in the history of floristic revisions covering the whole territory of Russia. In all cases these were preceded by works characterizing the Altai flora. In all these cases, the Altai served as a “training range”, where different approaches, applied in floristic revisions on the whole Russia (and USSR), were tested., – Rudolf V. Kamelin (1938–2016), Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, President of the Russian Botanical Society.
